    Welcome to the present:
Torqeedo Power on a lithium-manganese basis

Torqeedo now provides state-of-the-art batteries for the electrical boat drive. For boat drives, the Torqeedo Power  batteries stand for an enormous increase in performance  compared to conventional battery systems. Five arguments speak for Torqeedo Power:

    1) Increased energy density over lead batteries: the high-power batteries of the Torqeedo Power range are lithium based and, hence, have an enormous energy density. This is a decisive advantage when you consider the limited volume and weight in the boat. There are also significant advantages over heavy lead batteries when it comes to handling.

    2) Improved resistance to high current: conventional batteries can only provide a fraction of their nominal capacity in the case of load in the typical power range of larger electric motors. Torqeedo Power batteries, on the other hand, never let you down even when faced with the utmost loads on a boat.

    3) Higher charge stability: Torqeedo Power batteries remain charged for several months even when they are stored. This is particularly important for the use of the electric drive as an auxiliary motor. In this respect too, they are way superior to conventional batteries.

    4) Improved performance in the cold: lead batteries hardly perform at all at cold external temperatures. The Torqeedo Power, on the other hand, releases practically its full power even at cold outside temperatures. This is a tremendous advantage should an electric motor be used not only during the summer.

    5) Higher safety standards than all other lithium-based battery systems: the LIMA lithium-manganese cells used by Torqeedo are currently the only lithium batteries which also withstand all safety standards when the safety electronics are switched off. (See chapter entitled “Battery technology”). Nevertheless, each and every cell of the Torqeedo Power battery has its own safety mechanism. Torqeedo is the first provider to make the LIMA cells available for boat drives.

In addition to the advantages mentioned in the above, the Torqeedo Power Series is also characterized by its long life expectancy.

Normally, the capacity of a lithium battery system changes with the passing of time after its production. A lithium battery thereby loses around 4% of its capacity per annum. This ageing process is not significantly changed during use by the number of cycles. The batteries also do not have any memory effect. However, the lifetime of the battery changes dependent on the storage temperature and the charge state during storage. To increase the lifetime of the battery it should be discharged when possible if stored for a longer period of time and it should be stored in a cool environment. On the other hand, a long storage time in fully-charged state at high temperatures, e.g. over 40° C, reduces the lifetime of the battery.
