The Admiralty Manual of Navigation draws on the UK Royal Navy’s centuries of experience and expertise to form a comprehensive reference for safe and effective navigation at sea. The two volumes cover the full range of techniques and equipment needed for ocean and coastal passages, pilotage and anchoring.

Volume 1, Principles of Navigation, was thoroughly updated in 2019 and is now ‘digital by default’, so is principally designed for the modern electronic bridge. Nevertheless, it also covers the tried and trusted techniques that must be employed when paper charts are being used and GPS is not available.

Although satellite technology enables almost every mariner to use electronic navaids to fix their position on the oceans, electronic systems can be disrupted, either through equipment or setup errors or through malicious interference. The subject of Volume 2, Astro-Navigation, therefore remains the most reliable means of navigating out of sight of land. The volume was completely updated in 2018 and provides valuable guidance on using UKHO/Nautical Almanac Office’s NavPac v4 software.
